Financial Crisis:
 |

 |
Standing Tall Against our Greatest Threat
The bad new seems to be coming from everywhere we look. You can’t turn on the TV, open a newspaper, or log onto the web without being overwhelmed with headlines warning of America’s impending financial doom.
But is the sky really falling? That’s the question I’ve been discussing more and more with my constituents on a daily basis. Recently, a friend suggested I see the newly released documentary I.O.U.S.A. “One Nation, Under Stress, In Debt.” During the City of Miami’s annual budget process, I actually did see the film and immediately requested every city executive view it before the second reading of the budget. Unfortunately, the movie was pulled from the only theater showing it in South Florida.
I.O.U.S.A. addresses perhaps the greatest immediate threat facing our city, our state, and our nation. This threat is financial.
We’ve all read the front page stories in this newspaper detailing the implosions of the US housing market and Wall Street, down 40% in one year. Now we’re reading about the credit crisis. Our credit debt has exploded from $770 billion in 2003 to just under 1 trillion dollars this year.

Something Has To Change
Unfortunately, while our elected leaders in Washington continue their partisan bickering, a real-life solution appears to be little more than a pipe dream.
It’s time we start the ball rolling in South Florida to reverse the negative trends and move ahead to a bright future. It can be done. It must be done.
I’m calling on my honorable fellow commissioners in the City of Miami and all elected officials in South Florida to put political differences aside and work together on genuine solutions. It won’t be easy and tough decisions will need to be made. We must address our fiscal future, sooner rather than later, and expect to be held accountable for our actions or inaction.
On October 30th, with the support of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation which created the film, I will be sponsoring the first municipal showing of I.O.U.S.A. in the City of Miami Commission Chambers. I’ve invited elected officials and top decision makers from throughout South Florida to attend and take part. I also urge all citizens to make the time to see the film.
We all benefit from information and must work cooperatively to return to top fiscal health.
Commissioner Marc D. Sarnoff, City of Miami
